Many feel it’s best to walk a dog off leash. Without a tether they are free to run, sniff, and explore their surroundings on their own terms. While this may be what makes your pup happiest it may not always be the safest. What are some ways to ensure success with an off leash walks?
Be sure they will respond to your commands: Before letting your dog go unleashed it’s important that they know their commands. If your pup begins to venture in dangerous territory you need to be sure they will respond when called. Before attempting off-leash walking make sure they have mastered the commands “Come”, “Sit”, “Stay”, “No”, and “Leave It”.
Choose your walk area wisely: Going off-leash when walking along a busy street could be dangerous to both your dog and motorists on the road. Even if your pup only stays on the sidewalk or the edge of the road they may be a distraction to drivers.
Make sure your dog is socialized: You never know who you will encounter along the way on a walk. Pup needs to be socialized with both humans and other dogs to be sure they will not display aggressive behavior with anyone they meet.
A great way to socialize your dog and have them run off leash is a dog park. Bringing your dog starting at a young age is a great way to start them on the road to good behavior while on an unleashed walk.
